Future Horizons: January Semiconductor Update

We’re pleased to share the Future Horizons Semiconductor January update.

For the latest industry insights read on below:

Executive Summary

Annualised growth rates fell back slightly in November, with Total Semiconductor sales up 29.5 percent year on year vs. 32.6 percent in October and 27.5 percent in September, but still above August 2024’s 28.5 percent cyclical peak.

All three sectors continued to show positive annualised growth, albeit at much lower single digit numbers vs. Total ICs stratospheric 33.0 percent performance, with Opto and Discretes growing a respectable 7.3 and 3.7 percent respectively. Last month’s numbers were 36.7, 6.7 and 8.5 percent.

With the overall semiconductor market back on a strong double-digit annualised growth trend, the 18-month period of flat growth from Jan 2024 to July 2025, looks like it was just an extended consolidation pause in the recovery path from the July 2022 bust, similar to what happened in the January 2020-2021 recovery.

Market Outlook

Looking ahead to 2026, the outlook is cautiously positive, but highly uncertain. The strong growth in Q3 2025, one of the strongest growth quarters on record surpassed only by Q3 2009, lifted the full-year growth to 22 percent.

However, this strong performance reflected a tale of two markets with growth heavily concentrated in the AI infrastructure and HBM memory markets, not the traditional end markets such as smartphones, PCs, notebooks, wearables, TVs and automotive.  Critically, 2025’s growth was ASP, not unit, driven with unit shipment volumes still languishing in recession.

The two big questions entering 2026 are: “Will the AI hyperscale infrastructure market boom continue unabated” and “How strong will the non-AI market recovery be?”

Other key unresolved questions include: “When unit growth will resume”, “Can ASPs continue to rise” and “What will be the impact of the over-investment in non–bleeding-edge CapEx, particularly in China?”

With the global economic outlook tenuous at best, these factors collectively drive an unusually high level of uncertainty for 2026.  Whilst 2025’s strong value growth may have looked like a super cycle, the underlying detail showed it was not a broad-based industry recovery.

Just as COVID-19 triggered the 2020-21 boom and the subsequent 2022 collapse, Chat GPT triggered the 2024-25 AI hyperscaper boom and the risk of an AI demand correction in 2026 cannot be ignored.

If current AI demand stumbles and other markets fail to rebound, today’s primary growth engine could quickly become tomorrow’s biggest vulnerability.

On balance, given the wide range of uncertainties and the unlikely scenario of no first half year major shocks, the chip market could likely grow 12 percent in 2026, possibly even as high as 18 percent. What we are far less confident about is the sign in front of this number.

If it is ‘business as usual’ and there are no major hiccups, 2026 growth would be plus 12 percent.  If, on the other hand, the AI infrastructure market collapses and the global economy slows, 2026 growth would be minus 12 percent.

WMG Publishing Acquires Key North American Titles from MMG Publishing

Mark Leary, Owner and Publisher of MMG Publishing, has announced that the Electronics Sourcing North America (ESNA) and Designing Electronics North America (DENA) magazines, plus associated products, have been acquired by WMG Publishing Limited, a company owned and run by his son William.

WMG is known to focus more on North America, and as such, the acquisition has resulted in Electronics Sourcing Europe and Electronics Sourcing UK ceasing publication, with December 2025 being the last edition.

With the UK and European editions of Electronics Sourcing accounting for a small fraction of MMG’s sales income, the acquisition presents the move to concentrate efforts on MMG’s key US targeted print magazines and digital products, whilst closing the European side of the business.

Despite the change in ownership, continuity remains central to WMG’s plans. Mark Leary will continue as Publisher, while Jonathan Barrett and Max Maxfield will retain their editorial responsibilities for ESNA and DENA respectively. Publishing schedules, circulations, and all current advertising and editorial bookings will remain unchanged, with the January 2026 editions of both titles set to be published under the WMG banner.

As Mark hands over ownership to his son (good luck getting your expenses signed off Mark), the transition marks a significant moment in the history of the Electronics Sourcing brand, seeing the brand move under the leadership of the next generation, and setting the stage for a new and fresh approach with the publications moving forward.

Magyar Elektronika to suspend magazine activity at the end of the year

We were sad to hear the news that the Hungarian publication, Magyar Elektronika has officially announced that it will suspend both its print and online operations at the end of the year.

Future Horizons: November Semiconductor Update

We’re pleased to share the Future Horizons Semiconductor Update for November.

For the latest industry insights read on below:

Executive Summary

Annualised growth rates accelerated sharply in September, with Total Semiconductor sales up 25.8 percent vs. September 2024, up from August’s 21.8 percent and similar to July’s 26.0 percent, growth.  It was also homing in on August 2024’s 28.5 percent cyclical peak.

Encouragingly, all three sectors still showed positive annualised growth, with Total ICs continuing their lead as the prime industry growth driver, at a robust 31.7 percent, significantly up from last month’s 24.7 percent, with Opto growing at a respectable 8.0 percent rate. In contrast, whilst still positive, at just 0.4 percent growth, Discretes poured cold water on the broader industry recovery.

With the overall semiconductor market still showing strong double-digit annual growth, the overall trend is now on an upward path.

These peaks do not last forever, and we continue to expect to see this trend turn down in the coming months, as per past cyclical patterns, with the only uncertainty being as to when this will happen.

As a sign of what’s to come, September saw month-on-month semiconductor sales decline 8.8 percent from August which, at 11.4 percent growth, was down on July’s 19.4 percent growth.

With Total IC month-on-month growth at minus 9.0 percent, Opto at minus 10.4 percent and Discretes at minus 5.1 percent, all product sectors have now experienced three consecutive months of slowing month-on-month growth.

Forecast Update

Were it not for AI, the chip market’s growth would have been far more muted, with the old-line consumer, industrial, telecom and even automotive product demand still languishing amid high trade tariffs and a slowing world economy.

Whilst there is some comfort to be gained from the fact no-one saw this eye-watering Q3 spurt coming, it highlights the distorting impact of the massive doubling down in the AI Hyperscaler space.  It really is now a tale of two markets, a raucous AI party that refuses to die and a moribund everything else.

Future Horizons: October Semiconductor Update

This October we’re pleased to share the Future Horizons Semiconductor Update. Check it out below for the latest industry insights:

Executive Summary

Annualised growth rates somewhat retreated in August, with Total Semiconductors growing 21.6 percent, down from last month’s 26.0 percent, but up from June’s 18.0 percent, 6.9 percentage points down from August 2024’s 28.5 percent cyclical peak.

Encouragingly, all three sectors still showed positive annualised growth, with Total ICs continuing their lead as the prime industry growth driver at a robust 24.5 percent, albeit down slightly from last month’s 29.3 percent number, with Opto up 3.5 percent and Discretes up 3.6 percent, vs. last month’s 8.0 percent and 6.9 percent respectively.

Whilst the overall semiconductor market still showed a strong double-digit growth, the overall trend is flat, at around the 20 percent plus/minus level, varying from August 2024’s 36.2 percent peak to January 2025’s 14.8 percent low.

These peaks do not last forever, nor do they turn up, and we continue to expect to see this trend turn down in the coming months, as per past cyclical patterns, with the only uncertainty being as to when this will happen.

Forecast Update

August saw the overall semiconductor market grow 21.6 percent vs. August 2024, driven by a 24.5 percent value growth in ICs. That in turn was the result of a 6.5 percent annualised growth in IC unit shipments and a whopping 16.9 percent increase in IC ASPs.

At the same time, Discretes grew 3.6 percent, their sixth consecutive month of positive annualised growth, firmly cementing the end of their two-year recession since their June 2022 collapse.

Whilst a recovery in Discretes does not mean the broader industry recession is over, we need a return to IC unit growth for that, it is a necessary pre-requisite and a huge step in the right direction.

Logic’s 38.6 percent annualised growth in August re-enforced its displacement of Memory, at just 17.6 percent growth, as the overall IC sector’s star growth performer.

It is still not clear what is driving Logic’s strong growth, which flies in the face of historical growth and competitive patterns, and it is more in synch with Memory than the other product segments. It is also ASP, not unit driven, which defies decades old semiconductor ethos and conventional economic wisdom.

Growth built on increasing ASPs is unsustainable and always collapses.

On a regional basis, annualised growth in Europe fell back to 2.5 percent, down from 5.6 percent in July and 5.9 percent in June, vs. the overall 21.6 percent market growth.

This was clearly not the best of news for Europe, with only Japan faring worse. In contrast, AsiaPac, the Americas and China saw strong double-digit annualised growth, at 53.5 percent, 15.7 percent and 15.1 percent respectively.

The AI data centre frenzy continued to dominate the chip market agenda in September, with TSMC as the main beneficiary. Its preliminary third quarter revenues surpassed all forecasts, including its own guidance, as AI-related chip sales drove advanced process demand.

With TSMC’s fortunes increasingly joined at the hip to the somewhat circular AI economy, we can expect more of the same all the while the AI market stays red hot but watch out for a painful contraction should (when?) the AI exuberance runs its course.

There are no other outlets of any meaningful size to replace the current AI-chip centric, advanced node process sales.

Only time will tell if the AI bubble concerns are real, or if the crash, if it comes, will be less or more severe.  In the meanwhile, opportunity and greed will overcome any fears before the whole thing goes ka-boom.

One thing, at least to us, is clear. ChatGPT and its stablemates are never going to generate sufficient financial returns to justify the current trillion-dollar infrastructure investments, and there is still no obvious or affordable application-driven product that will trigger a billion plus annual unit sales, as with the PC and Smartphone era.

Technology enablers, like AI, do not generate revenue per se, but they eventually spawn the next generation of killer products that do. That day has yet to dawn.
