EDN Europe digital edition launching in January

EDN Europe has emailed subscribers offering the chance to subscribe to the magazine in digital format from January 2004. Like the recent mailing for EPN, subscribers can only select either the digital or the printed version.

UK newspapers and magazines to raise prices

If proof is needed of the competitive nature of the electronics media, just compare the price rises with the 9.2% average increase in the UK forecast by the media buying group Initiative. Although a few titles are looking for significant increases, some are keeping prices held to win more business. With the electronics industry still in a downturn, it seems inevitable that the pressure on prices will continue for the forseeable future.

IEE to launch Flipside in January

The IEE's title for schoolchildren interested in engineering, Flipside, will be launched in January. The trial edition went down very well, and the organisation has secured funding to allow 8 issues in the first year.

Call for papers - Ultra Wideband Systems

The IEE has issued a call for papers for a special issue of IEE Proceedings Communications on Ultra Wideband Systems, Technologies and Applications. The deadline for submissions is 31st January 2005.

Understand the British ???

A bit of fun for our readers outside of the UK. Apparently the Christams cards we send out say a lot about our companies. A quick guide to the subliminal messages given by these greetings has been written by the IEE.

Banner adverts used to spread worms

Anyone using online marketing must have been worried by the news that hackers had used banner adverts to spread a worm, infecting PCs around the world. With huge media coverage, this is likely to reduce click-through rates for online adverts - at least in the short term.

Interview with a VC

Not really anything to do with the European media, but a great interview with the founder of the legendary Sequoia Capital, Don Valentine, was recently published by CNET.

channel-e English language site launches

channel-e has launched the English language version of their popular website. With the claim of being the first pan-European electornics Magazine that is published in three languages (they also have a Russian site) this online publication is going from strength to strength.

The English site offers an RSS feed, and also a weekly email newsletter. The German site offers a daily newsletter, and this seems an obvious development for the English version of the publication in the future.

Mundo Electronico to include English articles

The Spanish title Mundo Electronico will publish at least one article per issue in English as well as Spanish starting with the Jan 05 issue. This move is clearly aimed at raising the profile of the title with potential advertisers, although no doubt will also be welcomed by readers - many of whom will use the English text to improve their language skills.

SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2004 preview

Following hot on the heels of a very successful electronica 2004, the SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2004 show starts tomorrow in the International Exhibition & Conference, Nuremberg, and runs until Thursday 25th November. Despite being so close to electronica, the organsiers claim it is bigger and more comprehensive than ever, with a record 1,030 exhibitors, seven exhibition halls and 65,000 sqm.

Chips & Tools adds two more dates for 2005

After the success of the first Chips and Tools show in the UK, ICC Media and InVents have announced three dates for 2005:

November 1st = Birmingham

November 3rd = Reading

November 8th = Edinburgh

It is great to see that the show is growing, especially so soon after the first event. The success also reflects the move away from larger shows towards small, focussed shows.

Electronics Industry Awards winners

A quick note to congratulate all the winners of the European Electronics Industry Awards, which were presented last Tuesday night. More details on the winners at the Electronics Weekly awards minisite.

Call for papers - International Service Availability Symposium

For the telecom market, the International Service Availability Symposium, which will be held in Berlin from 25-26 April 2005, is a key event. The call for papers has now been issued, and yo uhave until 15th Jan 04 to submit. Visit the SAF website or the event website for more information.

VNU Italy to launch list rental service

The electronica 2004 award for honesty should go to VNU Italy. They are to launch a electronics industry list rental service around March/April 2005. Although theoretically you can rent electronics names from them now, the honest Italians have admitted that it is pretty much impossible to get the list you need with the current setup.

With Italy growing in importance - according to some analysts it has overtaken the UK and is now the #2 electronics component market in Europe - this is great news. Even better, the list is opt-in, and you can rent email addressess as well as postal addresses. The only catch is a €6000 minimum annual advertising spend across all the VNU industrial titles - something that shouldn't prove too big a hurdle for most clients.

Hanser to launch German automotive site with channel-e

Hanser, publishers of Mechatronik and Automotive Electronics and Systems, is to launch an automotive website www.hanser-automotive.de. The site will be launched in conjunction with channel-e, who will provide the technology.

Unlike the launch from MTP, the German market is already pretty crowed (although it is bigger than the UK). Despite this, we believe that this launch really makes sense: it will complement Automotive Electronics and Systems, and by taking the brave decision to not use in-house web technology, Hanser has been able to pick the proven effective technology that underpins channel-e.

MTP to launch UK automotive title

With 11% of the electronica 2004 attendees working in the automotive field, MTP (publishers of MicroTechnology) have timed the announcement of their plans to launch a new automotive title perfectly. Details are still very sketchy, although the focus on the UK market addresses a niche that hasn't been served. We'll publish more details as them magazine moves towards its launch.

Nepcon confirms dates for 2005

The long standing UK show, Nepcon, will be held on 11-12th May 2005 at the Hilton Metropole, Brighton. The show will again prove that electronics manufacturing is still [just about] alive and kicking in the UK.

Ian Crawford, exhibition director of Nepcon claims, "Nepcon's strength comes from providing exhibitors with a cost-effective, flexible and easy way to promote their products." We think that the chance for a day trip to the seaside helps to attract both exhibitors and visitors!

Call for papers - ESC Boston

The organisers of the Embedded Systems Conference Boston - which will be held at the Hynes Convention Center on 12-15 September 2005 - have issued a call for papers.

.

CIE France to reduce prices

Despite the small number of titles in France, Reed Electronics Group has decided to reduce the cost of space in CIE France by 15% for 2005. A bold move, especially from the publishing house that lays claim to the most expensive electronics magazine on the planet, with EPN (although to be fair, CIE is also reducing its circulation!). CIE has struggled to gain market share in France against the powerful titles from Groupe Tests, so it will be interesting to see if this move changes the situation.

Channel-e to launch English language site

Channel-e, the German and Russian language electronics site will be launching an English version within 2 months. With more than 4 years of successful operation, the expansion of the site has been expected. No doubt more information about this launch will be available at Electronica!
